There are some discussions about wheter or not is is necessary to have an ultrasound after the abortion with Cytotec / Misoprostol.
Some groups of people say that if the woman doesn’t have symptoms of any complications, then it won’t be necessary to have an ultrasound after a medical abortion.
Others have advocated that the ultrasound has to be done after an abortion.
Always have an ultrasound after a medical abortion. You must get an ultrasound done7 days after taking the drugs to confirm, as soon as possible, if the pregnancy was indeed interrupted.
We defend the idea of performing an ultrasound after abortion whether you experience complications or not. Here are the reasons why:
1 – Several women may feel the abortion was successful. However we are talking about a feeling, an instict, and. If this is your case and if you are wrong, then the sooner you know, the better, therefore it will be possible to repeat the procedure. The ultrasound will help you to clear your doubts.
2 – Often the abortion was successful and the embryo will no longer develop, but some remains of the gestation can stay in the womb. Those remains come out naturally until the next menstrual period, but sometimes, they don’t come out, leading to two serious issues:
– Bleeding (most common)
– Infections (less common)
Through an ultrasound, you will get to know if your abortion succeded or not and if there is any remain of pregnancy left in your womb. If that’s the case, then knowing that there are some vestiges will make you pay attention to the symptoms of any problem. This is critical for you to have good health.
You must observe that:
If there is no sign of complications, such as severe pain in the stomach, fever, excessive bleeding or abnormal smelly vaginal discharge, there’s no need for any surgical intervention like a curettage, even if it is suggested by the doctor.
In all aspects a medical abortion is similar to a miscarriage; it is a process that occurs over time, and your body may need several weeks to expel all tissues and products of pregnancy from the uterus. It is NORMAL, don’t worry.
INCREASE YOUR KNOWLEDGE
Research has shown that, in order to make a correct diagnosis of an incomplete abortion, the ultrasound information has to be interpreted along with the data from the clinical examination (signs of complications such as excessive bleeding, severe pain that continues for several days, fever and abnormal vaginal discharge). It is already known that the ultrasound results after the medical abortion are quite similar to abortions with and without complications. (33)
Surgical evacuation of the uterus (through curettage/vacuum aspiration) in clinically healthy women is inadvisable, even when it is possible to see in the ultrasound that there are some remains of the abortion in the womb. In most cases, waiting for the next period, as it happens in cases of spontaneous abortion, is enough (with the exception of cases where the pregnancy continues).
Research shows that a week after a medical abortion, about 80% of women who had this procedure during the first trimester of pregnancy and that didn’t experience complications, keep carrying remains of tissue and blood in the uterus. It’s a normal situation that should’t cause concerns.
An ultrasound after an abortion is always a safety procedure that leads you to a better perception of your body.
