Misoprostol (Cytotec – 200mcg) doesn’t provoke effects that need to be clinically monitored. “A proper self-administration of Misoprostol (Cytotec – 200mcg) is simple. Unlike other drugs, such as adriamycin or injectable penicillin, which require administration under medical supervision due to rapid and potentially fatal reactions, it is not complicated to administrate Misoprostol (Cytotec – 200mcg) nor it involves difficult or dangerous symptoms that should be followed during or immediately after the administration”.(05)
Several studies about the possibility for women to take or not Misoprostol (Cytotec – 200mcg) at home were carried out. These same studies determine that women are capable to take Misoprostol (Cytotec – 200mcg) safely at home. (09) There are several studies that prove that women can endure the side effects.
One of the studies that included thousands of American women, intended to assess whether they could use safely and successfully, the Misoprostol (Cytotec – 200mcg), with a minor oversight by health professionals. The scientists observed that women followed the instructions to seek help if problems occur. Also concluded that the women in this study were able to cope with the loss of tissue and blood while performing abortions on their own. (05)
In another study that involved more than 1 000 women, researchers pointed out that the mandatory follow-up visits after having a medical abortion may be unnecessary. They said: “We suggest that giving women simple instructions and advice about detecting complications would be a suitable alternative to follow-up visits, as there is little evidence that follow-up visits can detect a problem that women are unable to learn how to recognize by themselves”.(14)
Women seek medical care if they have a problem. When they have information and access to medical care in case of emergency, women in both developed countries and in developing countries, can deal alone with the effects of an abortion. (01)
The British Pregnancy Advisory Service and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists support women’s access to medical abortion at home . (23)
