Can I drink alcohol?
The medical abortion performed using Misoprostol (Cytotec – 200mcg) is a process that may take for periods up to a week. Therefore, it is important do divide this same process in two major stages:
It is strictly forbiden to consume any alcoholic beverages during the entire abortion procedure.
- The medication intake (STAGE 1)
Comprises the fasting period of 6 hours before taking the medication + the use of the initial dosage + 4 hours break + the use of the second dosage + fasting period of 6 hours after the last dosage.
- The week after the medication intake (STAGE 2)
Comprises the time it takes for the body to expel the pregnancy. We assume one week as the minimum period of time where the abortion can occur. This is the reason why medical examinations to confirm wheter the abortion was succesful or not are only relevant when performed one week after taking the pills.
Alcohol affects perception, capacity for discernment and the ability to make decisions by those who drink it. For this reason, it is STRICTLY forbiden to drink any type of alcoholic beverages during the entire first stage, that includes the moment when the woman takes the pill.
The second stage, which is basically an observation phase, might involve some visits to the doctor due to bleeding that becomes a little more or less heavier (something normal). For this reason, it is recommended to wait for the end of this stage to drink alcohol again.
