If the abortion fail, then we have what is called a continuing pregnancy. It is a pregnancy that continues to develop even after taking Misoprostol (Cytotec – 200mcg).
In this case, the abortion failed completely, and the woman is still pregnant. In many cases, even if bleeding occurs, it is still possible to have a continuing pregnancy.
You must have an ultrasound approximately 7 days after taking Misoprostol or a pregnancy test 3 weeks later in order to confirm whether the pregnancy has ended or not.
Bleeding does not necessaily mean you’ve had a successful abortion.
If you still have symptoms of pregnancy such as sore breasts or nausea, it means you might have an ongoing pregnancy, that is to say the abortion was not successful. However, since the hormone levels take up to 4 weeks to return to normal, it is possible to feel these pregnancy symptoms even if your abortion was successful.
Having a reduced bleeding does not mean that the abortion has failed .
You can have a successful abortion with a very low bleeding. Every woman has a different body and variations among them are a normal fact. Usually in short length pregnancies (up to 4 weeks, for instance) the bleeding is very low, so it is not possible to evaluate the success or the failure of an abortion by its volume of bleeding.
Once the procedure of abortion is done with Misoprostol (Cytotec – 200mcg), you can only know if the abortion failed or if was successful by doing an ultrasound about 7 days after using the drugs. You can also have a pregnancy test 3 weeks later.
You can decide not to get an ultrasound, nor a pregnancy test. However, you may be surprised with an ongoing pregnancy and, if it happens to be too advanced, you will no longer be able to repeat your medical abortion.
