If the abortion with Misoprostol (Cytotec – 200mcg) fails and the pregnancy goes on, the risk of having a baby with birth defects increases. However, this threat is slighty inferior than 1 in 1000. This risk is lower than the chance of having a baby with Down Syndrome.
The risk of having an embryo with congenital malformations after having used Misoprostol (Cytotec – 200mcg) is lower than the risk of having a baby with Down Syndrome in a regular pregnancy.
To avoid the risk of having an embryo with fetal malformation, we advise women with ongoing pregnancies (the ones that continues after an unsuccessful abortion) to undergo surgical abortions or to try a medical abortion for the second time.
This way, it will be possible to interrupt the pregnancy and thus completely avoid the risk of carrying a fetus with a malformation.

Studies suggest that the exposure of the embryo to Misoprostol (Cytotec – 200mcg) can cause birth defects, such as defects in the skull and abnormalities in the limbs (called Mobius Syndrome) (28). However, the risk of having a baby with congenital defects after taking Misoprostol (Cytotec – 200mcg) is still very low and hardly measurable. (24)
To compare: the risk of having a child with Down Syndrome is 1/1.300 for a 25 year old woman. With the age of 35, the risk increases to 1/365 (25).
