What is a curettage?
Acurettage or dilatation & curettage (D&C) is a surgical procedure that allows to remove the remains of abortion. This treatment is is occasionally necessary, especially when there are complications after a medical abortion or miscarriage.

However in some countries, doctors have the habit of performing a curettage routinely, even when there are no medical reasons for this. You do not need a curettage in any of the cases below:
- If you do not have symptoms such as pain, fever, or severe bleeding (YOU DON’T NEED a curettage);
- If the ultrasound shows that there are some remains in uterus (YOU DON’T NEED a curettage);
- If you have light bleeding after 3 weeks (YOU DON’T NEED a curettage).
After the regular menstruation there should not be any remains left in the uterus.
Nevertheless, if you experience any of these symptoms:
- Fever;
- Persistent pain;
- Severe haemorrhage.
Then you will need a surgical procedure called Vaccum Aspiration.
Ask the doctor what type of procedure he will use, since the vaccum aspiration is better than an instrumental curettage, or D&C (vaccum aspiration is less painful and has fewer risks).

Dilation and curettage should only be performed if complications are diagnosed and in if there are no possibilities of carrying out a vaccum aspiration.
