Acurettage or dilatation & curettage (D&C) is a surgical procedure that allows to remove the remains of abortion. This treatment is is occasionally necessary, especially when there are complications after a medical abortion or miscarriage.
A curettage or dilatation & curettage (D&C) is a surgical procedure that allows to remove the remains of an abortion.
However in some countries, doctors have the habit of performing a curettage routinely, even when there are no medical reasons for this. You do not need a curettage in any of the cases below:
- If you do not have symptoms such as pain, fever, or severe bleeding (YOU DON’T NEED a curettage);
- If the ultrasound shows that there are some remains in uterus (YOU DON’T NEED a curettage);
- If you have light bleeding after 3 weeks (YOU DON’T NEED a curettage).
After the regular menstruation there should not be any remains left in the uterus.
Nevertheless, if you experience any of these symptoms:
- Fever;
- Persistent pain;
- Severe haemorrhage.
Then you will need a surgical procedure called Vaccum Aspiration.
Ask the doctor what type of procedure he will use, since the vaccum aspiration is better than an instrumental curettage, or D&C (vaccum aspiration is less painful and has fewer risks).

“The surgical evacuation of the contents of the uterus can be performed if the woman asks for it, if the bleeding is intense or prolonged, if the bleeding causes anemia or if there is an evidence of infection.” (30)(32)
If the ultrasound detects remains but you happen to feel well, then it would be better wait a few days. If you develop any signs of any complication, you should rush to the doctor. Read this article:
How do I know if there is a complication and what should I do?
Dilation and curettage should only be performed if complications are diagnosed and in if there are no possibilities of carrying out a vaccum aspiration.
Vaccum aspiration is a more recent and much safer surgical method; it should be requested whenever there is a possibility to choose between vaccum aspiration and curettage. (35) (36) (40) (41) (48) (49) (50) (53) (54)
