Most women believe they are pregnant when they are sexually active and noticed they missed a menstrual period. Nausea, sore breasts and fatigue are also common symptoms in the early pregnancy.
You can do a pregnancy test from the first day of your missed period. Before this date, the hormone levels produced by the pregnancy will be too low to be detected by the test and could result in an incorrect negative, also known as a false negative.
Through an ultrasound, the doctor can precisely calculate HOW FAR ALONG the woman is in her pregnancy.
The ultrasound or the pregnancy tests are the only immediate resources that ensure whether a woman is pregnant or not.
Pregnancy tests cannot provide this information; they just say YES or NO with regard to the presence of a pregnancy.
A woman can also roughly calculate for how long she has been pregnant. She needs to find out when the first day of her last period was, including the day itself. After that, she must start counting up to current date.

A study was conducted to find out whether women in the United States and India could calculate how long they have been pregnant.
Calendars and worksheets were given to women so they could do the calculations. 98 in every 100 women that paticipated in the USA study group and 87 in every 100 women involved in the India study group were able to estimate how far along long they were in their pregnancies. Approximately 9 out of 10 women determined the time of their pregnancy with sufficient accuracy to use Misoprostol (Cytotec – 200mcg) by themselves. The researchers concluded that:
“The vast majority of women seeking for abortions during the first trimester of their pregnancy, within this study, could accurately calculate the lenght of their gestation with a margin of error clinically irrelevant for a safe and unsupervised use to induced abortions through medication” (02).
We always recommend doing an ultrasound before the abortion procedure. This establishes a security measure adopted by the website Aborto na Nuvem, even though several studies do not support a pre-abortion ultrasound in order to increase women’s safety (59, 60).
